For the third time this season, Long Island University sophomore guard Antawn Dobie has been named Northeast Conference rookie of the week.
The 6-foot Corona native averaged 11.7 points, 6.3 assists, four steals and three rebounds in leading LIU to a 3-0 week. The McClancy grad, who is one of the front runners for NEC rookie of the year along with Wagner forward Jermaine Hall, sparked the Blackbirds in a 60-56 win over Wagner Saturday.
Dobie scored eight of his 12 points in the last four minutes, including a three-pointer with 2:20 left that put LIU ahead for good. Dobie averages 12.6 points and 4.4 assists a game for the Blackbirds this season.
Former Forest Hills standout JaJa Bey was also impressive, with seven points and five rebounds against the Seahawks. Bey, a 6-foot-7 forward from Lefrak City, has started the last nine games for LIU and has averaged 8.3 points per game in the last three.
Edwards and Cargill garner CUNY honors
York's Neil Edwards was named CUNY men's basketball player of the week and CCNY's Lauren Cargill picked up rookie of the week honors for the third time this year.
Edwards, a 7-foot senior center, has led the Cardinals to eight straight wins, including a 3-0 week last week. The Far Rockaway native averaged a triple-double for the week with 17.0 points, 11 rebounds and 10 blocks per game while shooting 68 percent (23-34) from the floor. Edwards, who leads Division III with 6.8 blocks a game, equaled his NCAA single game high with 12 blocks in a win over Old Westbury last week.
Cargill, a freshman who played at Cardozo High School, averaged 20 points per game in CCNY's 2-1 week. The nation's leading scorer also added six rebounds, 4.3 steals, 2.0 assists and shot 44 percent from three-point range in a week that included a win over Lehman which moves City to the No. 2 spot in the North.
Track and Field
St. John's track and field hosted the Metropolitan Championships at the 169th Armory. Also competing were Southern Connecticut, C.W. Post, Long Island University, Stony Brook, NYU, Fairleigh Dickinson, Iona, Manhattan, St. Francis, Wagner, Columbia and NYIT.
The Red Storm men placed third, behind Rutgers and Seton Hall, with 94 points. Jose Zayas placed first in both the one-mile run (4:09.84) and the 1000 meter run (2:25.43). In the 500 meter run, Ben Catalano placed second with a time of 1:03.98. Jason Goulart placed second and marked a personal best for the year in the weight throw with a mark of 57-10 1/4. Dietrech Washington placed second in the high jump with a mark of 6-09.
The women placed third with 154.5 points, finishing behind Seton Hall and Columbia. Monique Daniels placed second in the 400 meter with a time of 55.71. In the 500 meter Tiffany Barnes took first with a time of 1:14.17. With a time of 2:55.02, Dinah Mensah took first in the 1000 meter run. With a personal best for the year, Gina LoMonaco placed first in the weight throw with a mark of 57-1/4.
Men's Basketball
York College 72, Hunter 57. Edwards had 25 points to lead the Cardinals.
Queensborough CC 91, Dutchess CC 82. Kevin Williams had a career-high 34 points and added 12 rebounds and nine steals for the Tigers. Queensborough improves to 5-15, 5-10 Region XV.
Women's Basketball
Queensborough CC 62, FIT 43. Tanya Walser had 13 points and Christina Quirk added 12 for the Tigers (6-9, 7-10 Region XV).
Queensborough 53, Kingsborough 36. Gina Ruggiano had 17 points and Yeny Cruz had 15 boards for the Tigers.
York 68, Kings Point 12. Tamara Taylor had 22 points and eight rebounds and Garrianne Brown added 14 points, nine steals and seven assists for York (10-8, 7-3 CUNY).
