It was a unique chance for Jenkins to get a first-hand look at the future of his team, especially with six players graduating in the spring. Jenkins certainly liked what he saw as the Terriers cruised to a 6-0 victory.
“This is the most talented junior varsity team we've had,” said Jenkins. “They have a great knowledge of the game and they have a lot of speed, which is something we haven't had here in a long time.”
Some of that speed was displayed by freshman Victoria Rodriguez, whose sister Tina is on the varsity team. Rodriguez scored three goals, including two in the opening 19 minutes, to lead the Terriers to their fifth league win.
“I used to play defense, but when Simone [Canfarotta] moved up to varsity, I was pushed up to midfield,” Rodriguez said. “A lot of the girls on this team played with each other before and we just click. All the girls hustle so much. We're all going to [varsity] tryouts next year.”
Fellow freshman Ariel Molloy set up Rodriguez's first goal in the 11th minute when she pushed the ball down the wing and Rodriguez was able to bury the ball low inside the far post from 12 yards out to give St. Francis Prep a 1-0 lead.
Eight minutes later Ciara McArdle dished to Rodriguez, who chipped the ball into the net to give the Terriers a two-goal lead.
St. Francis Prep broke the game open with four goals in a 15-minute span midway through the second half. Sophomore Cristina DaSilva scored a pair, Molloy added a breakaway goal and Rodriguez netted her third on a chip shot off a corner kick to put the Terriers up, 6-0.
“We have a lot of fun out there,” said Molloy. “We play real well together.”
A good sign indeed for Jenkins.
St. Francis Prep 1, St. Anthony's 1. Christine Lettieri tied the game for the Terriers in a 1-1 draw against league powerhouse St. Anthony's Friday. St. Francis Prep could clinch third place with two wins in its final three games.
The Terriers (5-3-2 NSCHSGAA) play Kellenberg in a game scheduled for Wednesday, host OLMA Thursday at Fort Totten and play at Holy Trinity to close out the regular season Monday.
The Mary Louis Academy 6, Stella Maris 1. Samantha Cohen and Kristen D'Amore scored two goals apiece to lead the Hilltoppers (7-0 GCHSAA).
