Police Blotter: Cops release sketch of suspect in immigrant’s fatal shooting

OZONE PARK — Police released a composite sketch of one suspect in the fatal shooting of a 43-year-old Guyanese immigrant two weeks ago while he was drinking coffee in a deli across from the Ozone Park supermarket where he worked, police said.

Police are still searching for two black men in their 20s or 30s. Cops said one man was wearing a blue denim jacket and the other was wearing a dark-colored jacket with the letters “DKNY” on the back, the number “55” on the left sleeve and the letter “D” on the left breast.

John Freddy of Brooklyn, a regular customer at the Central Mini Market at 76-20 Liberty Ave., was pronounced dead when police arrived at the scene at 6:49 a.m. Feb. 8.

Police said the preliminary investigation revealed that one man distracted the clerk by asking him for items in the store while the other shot Freddy once in the head.

Man found dead in Bayside hotel

BAYSIDE – A guest who checked into the Adria Hotel Feb. 14 was found dead in his room five days later, police said.

Eric Ortiz, 31, checked into the hotel using his credit card, police said. When a maid entered his room later that day to clean it, police said Ortiz complained of chest pains and asked her to leave the room.

Police said Ortiz hung a “do-not-disturb” sign on the doorknob and was not seen again until Feb. 19, when hotel staff entered the room and found him lying face up on his bed.

Police did not know why Ortiz was staying at the hotel, and the medical examiner could not confirm the cause of death as of press time.

Man falls on tracks, hit by oncoming F train

BRIARWOOD – A man who slipped and fell onto subway tracks suffered a broken leg after being hit by an oncoming F train at the Briarwood/Van Wyck Blvd. station Friday, police said.

Javier Rivera, 32, was injured at 11:30 a.m. while pulling himself up off the tracks, police said.

Pit bulls attack police officers at Far Rockaway address

FAR ROCKAWAY – A pair of pit bulls bit two police officers Friday, and an officer shot one of the canines.

Police arrived at 54-49 Almeda Ave. when they were attacked by the two dogs. A male in his 30s and the unharmed dog then fled the scene, police said.

The officers were treated for dog bites and the investigation was ongoing.

Woman hit, injured crossing Jamaica street

JAMAICA – A 68-year-old woman was hit by a car Tuesday as she tried to cross 175th Street at Hillside Avenue, police said.

The tan Lexus that hit the woman was traveling northbound on 175th Street and attempting to make a left onto Hillside Ave. when the incident occurred, police said.

The Lexus fled the scene, and the woman was taken to Mary Immaculate Hospital in critical condition, police said.

There were no other reported injuries. No arrests were made and the Highway Accident Investigation Squad was investigating.

Jamaica shooting victim critical, suspect flees scene

JAMAICA – A 55-year-old man was shot once in the face at 162-40 Jamaica Avenue on Friday afternoon, police said.

The suspect, a male, fled the scene, police said. The victim was taken to Mary Immaculate Hospital in critical condition.

No arrests were made and the investigation was continuing.

Astoria beating victim listed in critical condition

ASTORIA – A 62-year-old man was found beaten and unconscious on an Astoria street Friday, police said.

The man had been struck in the head with a blunt object and robbed by a group of people in front of 8-07 Astoria Blvd., police said. The assailants fled and the victim ran and collapsed in front of 28-02 8th Street, where police found him.

The man was taken to Elmhurst Hospital in critical condition. No arrests were made an investigation was ongoing.

Robber hits North Fork Bank in Sunnyside, gets $1,200

SUNNYSIDE – A man robbed a North Fork Bank of $1,236 on Thursday afternoon, police said.

The suspect passed a note demanding money to a teller at the bank at 34-51 48th St., police said. There were no reported injuries.

The suspect, described as a male Hispanic in his 30s between 5’5” and 5’8” wearing a dark jacket, was still at large. An investigation was ongoing.

G train passenger gets ‘haircut’ in Jackson Hgts

JACKSON HEIGHTS – A 50-year-old man riding a southbound G train was cut on the scalp during a dispute with another passenger at the Roosevelt Avenue station Sunday afternoon, police said.

Phillip Williams, 40, of 154-14 Rockaway Pkwy., was arrested and charged with assault, police said. The victim was treated at Elmhurst Hospital and released, police said.
