State Assemblywoman Margaret Markey (D-Maspeth) announced last week that the New York State American-Irish Legislators Society will be sponsoring its 5th annual College Scholarship Essay Competition.
The competition, open to high school juniors and seniors expecting to graduate by 2004 or 2005, has first, second and third place prizes of $1,500, $1,000 and $500, respectively. All awarded prizes must be used at an accredited college in New York state.
Markey, treasurer of the American-Irish Legislators Society, said the essays will explore the role of America in pursing peace in Northern Ireland.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for local high school students planning to attend college to learn about Irish-American history and receive financial relief towards college.”
The essays must be 1,000 words and most be postmarked by April 9, 2004 and include a nomination from a teacher or guidance counselor. The essays must be titled “The Pursuit of Peace in Northern Ireland – The American Role.”
Entries are to be submitted to: Scholarship Review Committee, American-Irish Legislators Society, Legislative Office Building, c/o Room 648, Empire State Plaza, Albany, NY, 12248.
