In an effort to assist low-income and English-as-a-second language residents learn of their tax rights and responsibilities, City Council Finance Committee Chairman David Weprin and Queensborough Community College introduced Q-Top, the Queensborough Taxpayer Outreach Program.
Two of the program’s prime objectives are to educate taxpayers for whom English is a second language about their rights and responsibilities and to provide them with the skills and ability to choose a reputable tax preparer. In addition, Q-Top will direct taxpayers to local organizations that offer free or low-cost preparation services. Part of the program is designed to encourage students’ knowledge of the tax system and to enhance their group presentation skills.
Q-Top will inform low-income individuals and families about the benefits attainable from tax credits if they meet certain eligibility requirements, including the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), the Child Tax Credit, and the Dependent Care Credit.
