Park your car on credit card

The famous American Express ad, “Never leave home without it,” may soon be a mantra for Queens drivers looking for parking space.
Some drivers in the borough will no longer have to beg unsympathetic store clerks for quarters just to park their cars.
Commissioner of the City Department of Transportation (DOT), Iris Weinshall, announced on Friday, June 16th, that the city will be expanding the number of meters that accept payment via credit cards.
At a cost of $90,000, the city plans to expand installation of new meters and updating older meters with a credit card payment option in Manhattan, Queens, and in municipal parking lots. In Queens, meters will be upgraded along Queens Blvd – under the No. 7 subway line in Long Island City, at Queens College in Flushing, along Skillman Avenue also in Long Island City and along Austin Street in Forest Hills. In Manhattan, the city will expand credit card capable muni meters along on the upper west side – along West 72nd Street and Columbus Avenue.
Last November DOT began a six-month pilot program equipping 200 muni meters
in the theater district (West 43rd Street to West 56th Street between Fifth Avenue and Broadway) with a credit card payment alternative slots. Data revealed that 20% of drivers chose to use personal credit cards – when offered the opportunity – to park their vehicles.
During the next twelve months, DOT will be updating meters, attaching decals to instruct the public on how to use them, as well as distributing fliers to alert the public.
The upgraded meters will accept all major credit cards – Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover. All meters will still accept coins and the New York City Pre-Paid Parking card.
