After years of work as a corporate attorney and a former West Wing advisor to President Bill Clinton, Sean Patrick Maloney is now campaigning to become the next Attorney General of New York State.
“I think it's the best job in New York politics,” Maloney said. “It's the best fit for what I've done as a lawyer.”
Maloney has been a part of many major investigations during his career, which he said would be a huge benefit as Attorney General. He ran a $3 million investigation into the management of a major bank and he worked for the Governor of Rhode Island to investigate the potential new owners of a major revenue-generating casino.
“This is the work I do and there's just nobody else in the race who has done this investigative work,” Maloney said.
Along with his law background, Maloney also worked as a senior West Wing advisor from 1997 to 2000 for Clinton, during which time he was the youngest person to ever be staff secretary.
There are many ways Maloney wants to improve New York State. He has created plans to keep children safer while using the Internet and reduce the amount of violence against women.
To benefit the state and Queens, Maloney also said he wants to improve emergency communications, increase victim compensation and increase security near airports while also decreasing drug and sex trafficking.
Maloney, who described the state's public authorities as being “corrupt and out of control,” said they need to be investigated, including the Public Service Commission. He blamed them for the recent blackout that left some Queens residents without power for a week and said it could have been avoided had they followed recommendations made after a 1999 blackout.
“It didn't need to happen,” he said of the blackout. “They're responsible, along with Con Ed.”
Maloney is one of four Democratic candidates participating in the primaries in September. Although he has been third in many polls, he said he is still “relentlessly positive.”
“I feel great about it (the primaries),” he said. “I've got them right where I want them.”
