Tony Sexton, 37, of 108-17 160th St., was convicted in January of second-degree murder and tampering with physical evidence after representing himself before Queens Supreme Court Justice Robert Hanophy. The judge imposed the indeterminate sentence and ordered Sexton to pay a $5,000 fine, Brown said.
According to the trial testimony, Sexton had moved in with his fiancee and her mother, Maria Rogers, 57, into the co-op that they owned at 108-17 160th Street in Jamaica, despite the fact that Rogers disliked her daughter's relationship with Sexton and the fact that he was moving into their home. On Feb. 14, 2003, while his fiancee was out of town, Sexton became enraged with Rogers and struck her multiple times in the head with a blunt object, killing her, the DA said. Sexton then cleaned the area with bleach, wrapped Rogers' body in fabric taken from a piece of furniture in the home before placing her in a plastic trash bag, Brown said. The following evening, Sexton put Rogers' body into her own car and drove approximately a mile to 97th Avenue and 148th Street, where he abandoned the vehicle, the DA said. Eight days later, police discovered the car with Rogers' body inside, the DA said.
