Will arrest of BB gun shooter end car vandalism?

A man has been arrested for allegedly shooting his cousin in the head with a high-powered BB gun, and now cops are playing the waiting game to see if the rash of vandalism that left close to 200 cars with their windows shot out will end.
According to officers of the 106th Precinct, the crime spree began nearly two weeks ago, and lately has been localized in Old Howard Beach.
“As of Friday, April 20, there were 111 reports,” said Lieutenant Mike Coyle. “Then there were 15 over the weekend. This number does not include those incidents that went unreported, so the number is closer to 200.”
One of those unreported cases was that of Alison Hickey, a resident of Old Howard Beach.
According to Hickey, she “got home from the Mets game [on Friday, April 13] and by Saturday morning it was done.”
Hickey, who drives a Ford Econoline Conversion Van, had had “one of the biggest windows in the car” shot out — the rear passenger side window.
And since she does not have glass coverage on the vehicle, she will not be filing an insurance claim, which means that she will have to pay out of pocket in order to have the window repaired.
“I haven’t gotten an estimate yet,” she said, continuing, “Even though I don’t feel like I’m in any danger, it’s annoying. It’s a real crime.”
Coyle told The Courier Sun that the spree has the potential to have a trickle-down effect.
“Once the windows are broken, people steal other cars for [replacement] windows and can even take goods from the vehicles,” he said.
There have been eyewitnesses present for only two of the incidents since the vandalism began, according to Coyle.
“In one case, they saw a white Volkswagen Rabbit hatchback and saw a gun pointed out of the window,” said Coyle. “In a second case, the witnesses saw a newer model white Jeep Grand Cherokee with tinted windows.”
“The dollar amount of damage done is staggering,” he continued. “It’s interesting to see if it [the vandalism] stops [now that a suspect has been arrested in a seemingly-related incident.]
