Healthcare for Lata Singh-Vasconcellos is where her heart is. For the last twelve years, she has worked in healthcare marketing for the Elmhurst and Queens Hospital Centers. Now, she has taken on a new role as the Chief Marketing and Development Officer for Queens-Long Island Medical Group (QLIMG), the largest physician-owned, multi-specialty medical group in the tri-state area.
“It is a new challenge for me. However, my experience in a hospital-based setting has been beneficial. At QLIMG I get to see the healthcare environment from an entirely different perspective,” said Singh-Vasconcellos. “I chose to come to QLIMG because the group is truly focused on delivering innovative, patient-centered care models in a primary care setting,” she added.
Singh-Vasconcellos is in charge of heightening public perception of QLIMG, which used to be recognized as HIP medical centers. Her duties entail delivering strategies to develop the public image and foster relationships for QLIMG that has 22 locations throughout Queens, Nassau and Suffolk counties and hundreds of medical personnel in all specialties.
“I enjoy knowing that the work that I am doing will help connect patients to excellent physicians and thereby getting them on the right track to maintaining their health, including, getting diagnostic tests like mammograms and controlling diseases such as diabetes, obesity and hypertension,” said Singh-Vasconcellos.
This message is one she works to solidify through brochures, websites, advertisements and her on-going relationships with the communities and local businesses in recommending that patients choose QLIMG because of the quality of care they provide. Consolidated by three smaller medical in 1991, and no longer owned by the HIP Health Plan, QLIMG has expanded to be a leading medical care provider, which accepts most health care plans, union plans and Medicare.
Singh-Vasconcellos’ experience with healthcare began long before her current position with QLIMG and her first position in the field with Elmhurst Hospital Center in 1996.
“I’m from a typical immigrant family and we used many of the sources that many of the immigrant families use including healthcare. That is why ensuring quality care for all is so important to me,” said Singh-Vasconcellos.
Her parents had emigrated from Guyana to the United States in 1972 and soon sent for their then three-year-old daughter. Singh-Vasconcellos grew up in East Elmhurst along with her older brother Samuel and younger brother David. She recalls relying on the medical resources provided in her community and the public healthcare system for the family.
Even today, Singh-Vasconcellos, who resides in Nassau County with husband, Andrew, and her two children, Tiffany and Matthew, still relies on healthcare system when her family needs a doctor.
