Health Fair Helps Community

The Queens-Long Island Medical Group (QLIMG) helped educate the community about important health issues during a summer health fair at its Richmond Hill Medical Office on Saturday, August 18 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
“We’re out here for the community,” said office manager Maria Paul, adding that they want people to know they are in the neighborhood.
During the health fair, community members were able to learn about diabetes, smoking cessation, rehabilitation, hypertension, allergies, osteoarthritis, and health insurance. There was also blood pressure and diabetic testing.
Ozone Park resident Seuppita Ramlakan said that she had been walking around when she saw the health fair and decided to stop by. She said that she learned about diabetes and also got her blood pressure taken. After finding out that it was high, Ramlakan was given a note to see a doctor and said she was going to do so following the health fair.
Felice Barra, a resident of Woodside, also took advantage of being able to have his blood pressure tested.
“We found out it was perfect so I’m very happy about that,” Barra said.
Paul Bhagat from Novartis Pharmaceuticals was set up at the health fair, giving patients information on blood pressure and letting them know about the risks of high blood pressure. He said that he got a good response from community members attending the event.
Healthfirst Medicare Representative Bonnie Blackman was also at the health fair. She was informing people of their Medicare advantage plans and additional benefits they can receive.
“It’s a great event and these are the kinds of things that a community should really take advantage of,” Blackman said of QLIMG’s health fair.
