Commemorating 9/11 around Queens

The sixth anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks will be observed all over the country next Tuesday. Here are some of the 9/11-related observances to be held in Queens:

Astoria/Long Island City - On Tuesday, September 11 at 6:30 p.m. (weather permitting) the Little Opera Theater of New York will hold its second annual memorial concert “Crosscurrents” in Socrates Sculpture Park, 32-01 Vernon Boulevard.
The concert will feature music by Chevalier de Saint-Georges, Aaron Copland, Louis Moreau Gottschalk and Scott Joplin.

Bayside - On Sunday, September 9 at noon, City Councilmember Tony Avella will lead a motorcade, which will visit each of the 16 sites within his district renamed in honor of 9/11 victims.
The motorcade begins on 130th Street at 25th Avenue in College Point, which is Firefighter Michael J. Elferis Street, and will end approximately 2 1/2 hours later at the northeast corner of Marathon Parkway and Thornhill Avenue in Little Neck, which is Christopher Racaniello 9/11 Memorial Way.

Bayside Hills - On September 11 at 7 p.m., the Bayside Hills Civic Association will hold an observance at the memorial at the Bell Boulevard mall, near the north service road of the Long Island Expressway.

College Point - On Sunday, September 9 at 5 p.m., the Poppenhusen Institute will host a 9/11 memorial concert featuring a musical performance by the children of the Tarumi Violin Foundation for the Arts, under the direction of Yukako Tarumi.
The concert will be held at 114-04 14th Road in College Point. Admission is free. For more information, contact Susan or Faye at 718-358-0067

Flushing - On Saturday, September 8 at 1 p.m., St. Michael’s Cemetery, located at 72-02 Astoria Boulevard in Flushing, will hold a September 11 memorial service and monument dedication.
The cemetery will dedicate its recently-installed monument to the 23 New York Police Department (NYPD) officers who were killed at the World Trade Center. Monuments to the firefighters and Port Authority police officers who perished are already in place.
More than 400 police officers and 200 fire fighters, as well as many elected officials and hundreds of community members, are expected to attend. For more information, call the cemetery at 718-278-3240.

Forest Hills - On Tuesday, September 11 at 7 p.m., American Legion Post 1424, the 112th Precinct Community Council and the Forest Hills Community and Civic Association’s annual Memorial Service will remember all who perished on that day. Local residents, Forest Hills Volunteer Ambulance Corps member Richard Allen Pearlman, and firefighters Pete Nelson and Steven Hoffman will be commemorated.
The memorial will be held at Remsen Memorial Park on Alderton Street, near Metropolitan Avenue.

Fresh Meadows - On Tuesday, September 11 at 7 p.m., the Friends of Cunningham Park invite everyone to join them for a free concert by song stylist Bobby Curtis and his band, to celebrate the lives of those who perished on 9/11 or in its aftermath.
Curtis and his group will present music of the 40s, 50s and 60s in the park performance area at 196th Street and Union Turnpike. There is no rain date.
The organizers advise the public to dress comfortably, bring their beach chairs, blankets, coolers and picnic baskets, and enjoy.

Ridgewood - On Tuesday, September 11 at 7:30 p.m., the St. Matthias Concert Choir will observe the anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attacks at Ridgewood Church, located on Catalpa Avenue between Onderdonk and Forest Avenues.
The free, hour-long concert will include a performance of Gabriel Faure’s Requiem. For more information, call Paul Kerzner at 718-802-5078.
