Gang gunplay near Jamaica school

What started as a dispute near a Jamaica school ended with an 18-year-old student shot, a cop firing his gun, and two people in police custody - and both the suspects and the victim have been linked to gangs, according to the NYPD.
The incident happened at about 10:40 a.m. outside the Queens School for Career Development, a special needs school, located at 142-10 Linden Boulevard in Jamaica.
A Department of Education (DOE) spokesperson, Margie Feinberg, said that the shooting did not occur in the school or on school grounds, but rather at a nearby bus stop.
According to police, officers on patrol in the vicinity observed a dispute involving several males. They then heard shots fired and discovered an 18-year-old male with a gunshot wound to the collarbone at the scene.
A police Sergeant who arrived on the scene encountered the suspect, a black male, who fired his gun at him. The cop then discharged his firearm, with no injuries.
The unidentified suspect, wearing a black “8-Ball” jacket, fled southbound down 142nd Street. He was apprehended soon after.
The school, which has a student population of about 425 and shares a building with the Queens Academy, an alternative high school, was locked down during the shooting. Since this is Regents testing week, the school was not on regular schedule, according to the DOE.
Feinberg said that during the lockdown, school administration personnel made calls to parents to alert them to the situation. The lockdown was lifted a little after 1 p.m., nearly two-and-one-half hours after the incident began.
“We were on our way at 10:30 this morning to a City Council meeting down at City Hall and we were discussing pretty much the idea of safety officers being outside the school, canvassing the perimeters, rather than being inside the school,” said Valerie Newman, community activist. “Had they been outside doing the things that I believe they should be doing, I believe they could have made a major difference to what just occurred this morning.”
A .22-caliber handgun was found in a nearby driveway.
The victim, who did not lose consciousness, was taken to Jamaica Hospital in stable condition.
“The individual who was struck was a Bloods gang member,” said Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly in reports. “The other two individuals were apparently members of the Crips gang.”
