Queens Borough President Helen Marshall and Assemblymember Michael Gianaris recently celebrated Greek Independence Day at the Hellenic Cultural Center in Astoria.
The annual event marked the anniversary of Greek independence from the Ottoman Empire and celebrated the contributions of the Greek American community to Queens and America.
This year, Gianaris and Marshall honored four unique members from the Greek Queens community for their contributions in the borough.
Barbara Neocleous, a registered nurse, has worked to improve health care and helped to launch the Visiting Nurse Service’s community center in Astoria.
Alexandra Rosa, Marshall’s Chief of Staff, began her career in government with then-City Council President Paul O’Dwyer and in 1983 came to Queens Borough Hall.
Athens native Panos Voyiatzis is a successful businessperson and civil engineer, whose company has built public parks, schools and hospitals.
Finally, Leandros Vrionedes is a lawyer, civic activist and entrepreneur, who created business opportunities for a start-up technology firm that specialized in consulting to law firms.
