Boro flu outbreak handled well

World Health Organization Director−General Margaret Chan warned of a full−blown swine flu pandemic, one that would place humanity under threat. This is scary stuff. I do not know if all is being done to combat and contain the spread of this flu worldwide, but I can only hope and pray.

I praise Mayor Michael Bloomberg, though, for pointing out that common sense should rule the day. He has given some good advise, that we should cover our mouths when we sneeze or cough and wash our hands frequently. He also suggested that if we have signs of the disease, we should stay home from work or school. Although that is easier said than done in these hard, economic times, these measures could help curtail the spread of the flu.

I would also like to commend St. Francis Preparatory School in Fresh Meadows for closing because of its many cases of swine flu. A few schools had done the same, which I also found commendable. Closing and disinfecting the schools was an important step in protecting the overall population.

In the end, we need to all do our part in this most serious crisis.
