Queens Council on the Arts to give grants to 43 groups, 17 artists

The Queens Council on the Arts will honor 43 arts organizations from the borough as well as 17 individual artists as part of its 2010 Community Arts Fund awards Jan. 21.

The group will hand out $224,000 to artists and arts organizations involved in the visual arts, film, theater, multimedia, literature, dance and music at the event, which will take place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Jan. 21 at the Jamaica Performing Arts Center at 153-10 Jamaica Ave.

At the event, the council will distribute $17,800 to eight Queens schools and cultural organizations that support it as well as announce the recipients of its Urban Artists Initiative fellowship and its Individual Artist Initiative mentorship program.

Borough President Helen Marshall will speak at the awards while representatives from the state’s Council on the Arts and city Department of Cultural Affairs will be on hand at the event.

Funds for the awards are provided by the DCA, the Council on the Arts’ Decentralization Program and the JP Morgan Chase Arts Foundation Re-grants Program.
