QBG names three to board

The Queens Botanical Garden (QBG) in Flushing has added three names to its Board of Trustees, including one with a lot of history.

Saul Kupferberg, son of public benefactors Max and Selma Kupferberg, has taken a position as QBG trustee. The Kupferberg family has a long history of supporting QBG, according to Board Chair Frank Mirovsky, who said that Saul’s father, Max Kupferberg, is a former QBG board member and treasurer for the Garden, located at 43-50 Main Street.

Kupferberg is the Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Kepco, Inc. an electronic power supplies company. He is also a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and a trustee of the Kupferberg Foundation and the Max and Selma Kupferberg Family Foundation.

A Manhattan resident, Kupferberg received his Bachelors degree from Trinity College and his Masters degree from Dropsie College in Philadelphia.

Also joining the board are Walter Sanchez and Howard Szarfarc.

Sanchez is the president and publisher of BQE media, publisher of the Queens Ledger, Brooklyn Star Newspapers, It’s Queens – The Magazine and La Semana Metro, a weekly Spanish-language publication.

The life-long Maspeth resident serves on the board of the Greenpoint YMCA; as President of the Kiwanis Club of Forest Hills; as a board member of the Queens Council Boy Scouts of America, and as the First Vice Chairman of Community Board 5, where he is also the Chairman of the Zoning and Land Use Committee.

Szarfarc is the Executive Vice President of Time Warner Cable, with oversight of the New York City Region. He has been associated with the company for 30 years in various capacities.

A member of the Mayor’s Broadband Advisory Committee for the city of New York, Szarfarc serves on the board of the New York Hall of Science and the board of directors of the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce. He holds an E.M.B.A. from Columbia University and a B.S. in Accounting from Brooklyn College.

Recently, Szarfarc served as Honorary Chair of the New York Chapter of Cable Positive, an organization that involves cable employees who volunteer to assist HIV/AIDS patients.

Mirovsky said he was “thrilled to welcome these talented community members” to the board. “Each of these individuals offers unique, invaluable expertise,” he said, adding, “We are so excited to have each of them involved and lending their time and leadership to our organization.”
