City studying possible ferry to LaGuardia

Ferry service to LaGuardia Airport and Astoria is among many locations involved in a study under way by a city agency, although it is not on the horizon yet.

“We want to emphasize that this LaGuardia-Astoria ferry route is not in any planning stage — just in a study — at this point,” said Julie Wood, a spokeswoman for the city Economic Development Corp.

“It is part of a long-range study of a lot of possible ferry service areas citywide,” Wood said. “Not in the near future.”

On the other hand, the development commission has issued requests for proposals for a ferry landing in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, as part of a pilot program possibly starting as early as spring 2011.

The study — not the pilot program — would also look into possible ferry stops along the Manhattan shore of the East River.

Most of the improved ferry service would be paid for by federal funds, but some city money would be involved.

Ferry service is available from Far Rockaway to Wall Street in Manhattan Friday, Saturday and Sunday and daily ferries run from Williamsburg to Wall Street with a stop in Long Island City.
