The winners of the VFW’s 2010-2011 Patriots Pen and Voice of Democracy Essay contests have been selected, according to Commander Marvin R. Jeffcoat of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2813.
Francis J. Sheridan of St. Raphael School in Sunnyside is the first place winner of the Patriots Pen contest. Sheridan will receive a check for $100 and an opportunity to compete at the district level, which encompasses Brooklyn, Nassau, Suffolk, and Queens Counties.
Antonio A. Sosa of Hunter Science High School in Manhattan is the first place winner of the Voice of Democracy contest and will receive a check for $100.
Marsima Hot of St. Sebastian School in Woodside and Joseph W. Trostl of St. Raphael School in Sunnyside are the second and third place winners of the Patriots Pen contest.
Tionna C. Haynes of Francis Lewis High School in Fresh Meadows and Royston J. Peters of Barton High School in Brooklyn are the second and third place winners of the Voice of Democracy contest.
All second and third place contestants will receive a check for $50.
“I am extremely delighted with their scholastic achievements and am sure they will serve as future leaders in our community,” Jeffcoat said.
All six contestants will be presented with a VFW certificate of recognition at the organization’s annual awards ceremony at St. Sebastian’s School in Woodside on December 17.
