LIC Market – A Taste of Home

It’s no secret that Long Island City has been experiencing quite the growth spurt, not only in new residents but also in businesses. And with the arrival of new business also comes the birth of new food establishments, ready and waiting to feed hungry employees and residents too. One such food newbie is LIC Market.
LIC Market is tucked away on the lower level of a residential brownstone, just steps away from Citigroup Plaza. As soon as you walk in, you can’t help but relax your shoulders and exhale – for inside lies a warm, comfortable eatery, offering a much-needed respite from busy work life.
The front-of-the-house piques your curiosity immediately, functioning as a little marketplace with homemade jarred items for sale such as pickled veggies, marmalade, spices, tapenade and more. There’s sparse seating up front and outside too, but also a private dining room in the back with additional seating and a lovely atmosphere. Boasting simple, lived-in furnishings with distressed table tops, wooden chairs and a neutral yet cheery color palate, LIC Market does a good job of making you feel at home.
The food offering at LIC Market continues their pre-established hospitality. If you come for breakfast, (from 7 – 11 a.m.) you can indulge in fresh, locally-sourced (when possible) items that often have a unique twist. Think ham and eggs with Serrano ham, a sliced tomato, and a soft-boiled egg and aioli; or the Bulls-Eye Eggs, cracked and fried into seven-grain bread, oozing with a rich, orangey yolk; or their freshly baked (and oh so flaky) Danishes and croissants.
Lunch consists of hearty sandwiches, salads and hot plates, also packed with goodness and tons of imagination. You won’t want to miss their grilled cheese, which is far from your ordinary white bread and American combo. This one contains a mild Port Salut cheese with apple, endives, honey-dijon and a touch of truffle oil. Salads feature root veggies for the fall, such as the Roasted Beet with red and golden beets, peppery radicchio, tangy goat cheese and toasted pecans. “Plates” offer a combination of both breakfast and lunch food with an omelet of the day, a classic burger and other comfort foods such as slow cooked pork or a roasted chicken.
Exciting new things such as dinner service and a liquor license are in the works too. In this way, LIC Market has a chance to become a staple in the neighborhood, sharing the wealth of great food, warm hospitality and a much needed slice of home.
