The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) is reminding motorists to report any potholes they see on state-owned highways.

To report a pothole New Yorkers in Long Island and upstate can call 1-800-POTHOLE (1-800-768-4653). In New York City, people can dial 3-1-1 to report potholes.

Potholes found on county, town, city and village streets, or private roadways should be reported to the appropriate authority.

“Monitoring the roads for potholes, and repairing those we know about is part of the Department’s maintenance program, but additional information we receive from the public is very helpful in this effort,” said Joan McDonald, acting commissioner of the NYSDOT.

Callers will be asked to give detailed information on the location of the pothole, including: county, route number, mileage marker, exit number and crossroad.

Motorists who want to be notified of the potholes repair can leave their name and address.
