Queens eateries soar in new Zagat guide

The Blue Book is back.
Proclaimed as the ultimate guide to New York City’s food and entertaining resources, Zagat has released its 2011/12 New York City Food Lover’s Guide which covers 1,491 establishments in the city including 380 party sites and 100 online resources.
Queens is well-represented with 80 establishments around the borough being recognized for their culinary arts. Some new faces in the guide include Astor Bake Shop in Astoria, LIC Market in Long Island City and Table Wine in Jackson Heights. Martha’s Country Bake Shop in both Forest Hills and Bayside also received a most favorable review being called “cozy and cute” as well as a great value.
“We are honored to be listed,” said Irene Zannikos, manager at the bakery’s Bayside location. “I think we offer something different than the average bakery.”
Like other Zagat guides, the Food Lover’s Guide is based on input from avid local consumers – 6,355 in all who visited local markets, ice cream parlors, bakeries and other non-restaurant establishments.
Of those surveyors, the top complaint was overcrowding and waiting in line followed by high prices and problems with service. To alleviate problems with waiting on lines, this year’s guide contains the best web resources that can be used to bring wanted products right to your door step.
“Being recognized by Zagat is certainly an honor,” said Seth Bornstein, executive director of the Queens Economic Development Corporation (QEDC). “But many Queens residents and foodies know that there are more than 80 great eateries and food establishments in the borough. If someone craves good food, authentic cuisine at the best price – Queens is the place to eat and shop.”
“New York City offers a wealth of options for anyone passionate about food, shopping and entertaining,” agrees Nina Zagat, Co-Chair of Zagat Survey. “This year, we’re excited to see so many outer-borough establishments scoring highly.”
