JAMAICA — A postal facility inside John F. Kennedy International Airport was shut down over the weekend when nail polish remover was mistaken for nerve gas, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said.
Workers dressed in hazmat suits inspected a building near the airport’s perimeter after two customs agents there reported an unusual smell coming from one package Sunday around 9:40 a.m., the New York Post reported.
The package, which was bound for an undisclosed address outside the United States, was found to have nail polish inside even though initial tests came back positive for weapons-grade chemicals, the Post reported.
“The FBI screened and tested the employees and the package they opened,” the FBI said in a statement. “The package in question was determined to be beauty supplies and nothing further.”
The custom agents who reported the smell did not require medical treatment, the Post reported.
