The drive-in-movie theatre is back. But this time, leave your car at home.
From October 4 through October 20 the New York Hall of Science (NYSCI) is hosting Empire Drive-In, a large-scale, multimedia installation and outdoor theater.
Made of 60 different cars and trucks reclaimed from a Brooklyn junkyard, Empire Drive-In serves as both entertainment and an art piece.
“The range of themes included in Empire Drive-In – car culture, technological obsolescence, creative reuse and nostalgia – illustrate that there is no limit to how science and technology can be presented in creative and engaging ways,” said Dr. Margaret Honey, president and CEO of NYSCI. “We know our community members will thoroughly enjoy such a unique installation.”
The audience will be allowed to sit inside or on top of any of the installation’s cars while watching the evening’s films, which will be projected on a 40-foot screen constructed out of salvaged wood.
The screenings offer something for every taste from silent films to a Bollywood movie and a double feature tribute to renowned B-movie producer Samuel Z. Arkoff.
Each evening will begin with a slideshow of late industrial images by photographer Stephen Mallon, and includes a sound program about cars and manufacturing, as well as live music and other performances.
On October 18, during a screening of bicycle-themed films, cyclists will be invited to bike to the drive-in.
Like the traditional drive-in, there will be plenty of food available for hungry moviegoers. A concession stand will feature “typical theatre treats,” including popcorn and candy, as well as hot beverages.
Tickets for Empire Drive-In shows cost $5 to $20.
