Crook Takes Church Cash

Stole Stash From Security Car In Maspeth

In the midst of last Tuesday’s (Jan. 21) snowstorm, an unidentified bandit swiped cash belonging to a Maspeth church from a security van outside the house of worship, law enforcement sources said.

According to police, the larceny occurred at around 12:30 p.m. last Tuesday in front of Holy Cross Church, located at 61-21 56th Rd., between 61st and 64th streets.

Reportedly, two representatives of a security firm came to the church in a vehicle to pick up cash and checks for deposit. Shortly after arrival, authorities noted, the workers discovered that the vehicle had a flat tire.

While working to fix the flat, police said, an unidentified person entered the security vehicle and removed a bag containing the church’s currency, then fled in an unknown direction.

The incident was later reported to the 104th Precinct. Detectives determined the bag contained over $7,000 in cash and checks received by the house of worship.

The case was presented to the 104th Precinct Detective Squad for further investigation, police said.
