A new six-story residential building will rise in Astoria once an existing apartment building is demolished.
The 10-unit building will be constructed at 23-60 31st Ave. near Kelly’s Bar and the Broadway N/Q stop. According to Department of Buildings records, Calvin Danzig of D10 Group Inc. filed applications for the structure, which will span 9,224 square feet. Tan Architect PC is the architect on record.
The block is filled with mostly two- and three-story apartments in a residential section of the neighborhood. Recently, The NYU Furman Center identified Astoria as one of the top 15 gentrifying neighborhoods in New York City.
The study found that one-third of the housing units added in New York City were added to these gentrifying neighborhoods, though these 15 neighborhoods only account for 26 percent of the city’s population.
It also found that the resident characteristics in Astoria have changed since 2000, with younger, college-educated residents making up a large share of the neighborhood.
