Fire hydrant leaks in downtown Flushing

By Madina Toure

A fire hydrant in front of a café and a flower shop in downtown Flushing was leaking water along Roosevelt Avenue Wednesday morning.

A little before 9:30 a.m. water could be seen gushing out of the hydrant on Roosevelt Avenue between Main and Union streets. The hydrant was right in front of Mio Life Café at 136-21 Roosevelt Ave. and the adjacent flower shop.

There was a puddle of water on the sidewalks surrounding the hydrant and on the street. The water was flooding from the hydrant up through the end of the block, at Main Street and Roosevelt Avenue.

An employee from the city Department of Environmental Protection took samples of the water and put it into a bottle and fixed the hydrant.
