A walk across the street turned deadly for an elderly man in Jackson Heights on Wednesday night, according to police.
Henry Boimel, 67, of 35th Avenue in Jackson Heights died after being hit by a taxi cab at the corner of 76th Street and 37th Avenue at about 7:29 p.m. on Jan. 18, authorities said.
According to information obtained by police, Boimel was walking across 76th Street when he was struck by a 2015 Toyota Rav4 operated by Dinesh Bhattarai, 45, of 76th Street in Jackson Heights. Police said the vehicle was heading eastbound on 37th Avenue and attempting to turn right onto 76th Street.
Officers from the 115th Precinct and EMS units responded to the location. Boimel, who suffered head trauma, was taken to Elmhurst Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Following a preliminary investigation, Bhattarai was arrested on a charge of failing to yield to a pedestrian in a marked crosswalk. Additional charges may be pending the results of an ongoing investigation.
