Fire officials are investigating a Forest Hills fire that left one person dead and another in critical condition on Tuesday morning.
The blaze broke out on Oct. 10 at 10:20 a.m. in the second floor of a three-story apartment building at 111th Street and 66th Avenue, an FDNY spokesperson said. The fire was brought under control at 10:53 a.m.
First responders found one victim, who reportedly ran from the building while on fire into the residence’s courtyard, dead at the scene, officials said. Authorities have identified the victim as 59-year-old Ramon Rahim.
Another 30-year-old male victim, who jumped out of a rear window to escape the fire, suffered burns to his face and arms. He is listed in critical condition at NewYork-Presbyterian Queens hospital.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, according to officials. Investigators found a non-functioning smoke detector in the apartment.
A total of 12 units and 60 firefighters responded to the scene.
