UPDATED Oct. 27, 9:45 a.m.

The store owner who was shot in the head during a robbery attempt at his Ozone Park business on Monday morning has succumbed to his injuries, police announced on Friday.

Hani Kasem, 64, of 166th Street in Jamaica died the day after he was shot by one of three suspects who came to rob his store at the corner of 101st Avenue and 99th Street at around 10:30 a.m. on Oct. 23. Law enforcement sources described the perpetrators as black men wearing suits.

The crooks walked into the shop and confronted Kasem and a 32-year-old man, whom police identified as the victim’s son. Authorities said that one of the crooks pistol-whipped Kasem in the head. CBS New York reported that the victim’s son was also pistol-whipped by the crooks when he attempted to help his injured father.

Soon after the attack, authorities said, the bandits fled the scene in an unidentified four-door vehicle.

Officers from the 102nd Precinct and EMS units rushed to the location after receiving a 911 call about the incident. Upon arrival, paramedics found Kasem in cardiac arrest; he was rushed to Jamaica Hospital, where doctors determined that he had also sustained a gunshot wound to his head.

The victim’s son suffered a laceration and was questioned, sources familiar with the investigation said.

No arrests have been made as of yet, police noted, and the investigation is ongoing.
