Alberto Layana, 46, of 65th Place was arrested and charged with robbery, criminal possession of a weapon and harassment. He is scheduled to appear in court on July 5.
According to law enforcement sources, on June 10 at around 7:25 p.m., a 26-year-old female victim was depositing $1,000 in cash at an ATM inside of Chase Bank at the corner of Main Street and 37th Avenue when Layana allegedly approached her from behind, displayed a knife and demanded the money.
The victim handed over the cash to the perpetrator, who then demanded more money. The victim then withdrew an additional $600 and handed it to the suspect.
Layana fled the scene on foot down Main Street when the victim alerted local authorities. Once police arrived to the scene, the victim pointed out the suspect, who was then apprehended.
Police officers Farley and Gismondi, who were responsible for the arrest, were commended for their efforts on the 109th Precinct‘s Twitter account.
