Queens Councilman Robert Holden is partnering with HeartScan Services to host a thyroid cancer screening event in Middle Village on April 20.
The event will be hosted at P.S./I.S. 49, located at 60-80 80th St., and is scheduled to run from 4 to 7 p.m.
Holden said that hosting the screening event for District 30 residents is essential to him and that screening for early detection can help to prevent complications.
HeartScan Services is a nonprofit organization that works to bring early detection to heart disease, stroke and peripheral arterial disease and thyroid cancer through screenings.
The thyroid gland is located in the neck and is susceptible to growths called nodules, which can potentially be cancerous and aren’t visible to the human eye.
“Thyroid is one of the controlling hormone organs in the body and if you have any risk with nodules — which are little growths — you should follow them,” said Marilyn Martingucci, CEO and president at HeartScan Services. “Unfortunately, most people never know they have them, so they don’t know to follow up.”
Martingucci is encouraging residents to attend the screening event and follow up with a doctor if they are showing signs of having thyroid cancer.
Meanwhile, Holden encourages his constituents to get screened to ensure they are taking “proactive steps toward a healthier future.”
The scanning will be free for the first 50 people who attend.
