In attempt to encourage safe cycling, Councilman Robert Holden’s office is partnering with the city’s Department of Transportation (DOT) to hold a free bike helmet fitting and distribution event on May 13 at Frank Principle Park at 63rd Street and Maurice Avenue in Maspeth.

Holden said he is happy to partner with the DOT to help promote safe cycling and is encouraging local residents to attend.

“Helmets save lives,” Holden said. “Join us in protecting your head and confidently hitting the road.”

According to a DOT spokesperson, the organization has fitted 15,500 bike helmets for New Yorkers across the five boroughs.

Additionally, the spokesperson said that as the DOT looks to continue to install more protected bike lanes, helmet distribution events such as this one are important to help encourage safe cycling.

Cyclists looking to get a new helmet can stop by Frank Principe Park from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on May 13. Helmets will only be given to those present while supplies last.

Adults over the age of 18 receiving a helmet must sign a waiver. A parent or legal guardian must be present to sign a waiver for children under the age of 18.
