Early-morning shooting in South Richmond Hill leaves man dead: NYPD

Police arrested an upstate New York man who was subsequently charged with murder one day after an early-morning shooting in South Richmond Hill that left a 31-year-old man dead.

Law enforcement sources said the murder happened at about 4:19 a.m. on Sept. 2 near a home on 125th Street, just south of 101st Avenue.

Officers from the 102nd Precinct, in responding to a 911 call about a man shot, found the 31-year-old victim with a bullet wound to his chest.

EMS rushed him to Jamaica Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later. He was later revealed to be Treva Sookmangal, of 102nd Street.

Long after sunrise Saturday, NYPD Crime Scene Unit officers and detectives were still combing the crime scene for evidence.

Police, on Sept. 3, announced the arrest of 23-year-old Shawn Singh, of Schenectady. He has been charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon, according to the NYPD.

The motive for the shooting remains unknown and under investigation.

The 102nd Precinct had reported four homicides year-to-date through Aug. 27, one more than the number at this point in 2022, according to the most recent CompStat report. Shooting incidents, however, have decreased in 2023 from 7 to 5, as have the number of shooting victims, from 12 to 7.
