The award is a matching grant to defray half of the $775,210 cost for the repair, restoration and renovation of the Louis Armstrong House under a new Master Plan. The "Save Americas Treasures" award will be applied to tasks that need to be completed before the House can be opened to the public.
Last December, Mrs. Clinton visited Queens College as part of her "Save Americas Treasures" tour. She walked through the Louis Armstrong House in Corona and the Archives, on campus, both of which she has identified as important cultural resources for the entire nation.
The Armstrong House, in Corona, is where Satchmo spent the rest of her life from 1943 on, following his rise to international celebrity as one of jazzs immortal innovations. He subsequently had successful careers in Hollywood (appearing in 30 films), on television, and entertaining audiences all over the globe. His was considered the best recognized face on the planet after he toured worldwide as "Americas Ambassador of Good Will."
The White House Millennium Council was formed in 1997 by the President and First Lady to celebrate the accomplishments of "The American Century." It took as its prime purpose "engaging every sector of our society in giving gifts to the future that convey our rich heritage." In turn, the Millennium Council established "Save Americas Treasures" to pursue the historic preservation of our shared heritage, from the flag that inspired Francis Scott Key to write "The Star Spangled Banner" to the Armstrong House and Archives at Queens College.
