A 25-year-old police officer from the 113th Precinct was shot in the leg Friday during a struggle over his weapon and taken to Jamaica Hospital, where he is in stable condition, police said.

Officer David Gonzalez and his partner responded to a 911 call reporting a woman being assaulted and a man with a gun in an apartment complex at 114-50 170th St. in Jamaica, police said.

Officer Chris Cottingham, a police spokesman, said the officers proceeded to the second floor where they tried to apprehend the suspect, William Hodges.

Inspector John McManus, the commanding officer of the 113th, said Gonzalez and his partner, Patrick Levy, confronted Hodges in a stairwell. The struggle ensued after Hodges, when asked for his identification, dropped his wallet to distract the officers and tried to run, the inspector said.

Gonzalez pushed Hodges against the wall and felt a lump in his ankle, which appeared to be a gun, McManus said.

Cottingham said the two struggled for Gonzalez
