Flushing man kills self following shooting: Cops

By Brian Lockhart and Jyoti Thottam

A Flushing man killed himself Sunday night after shooting and wounding a middle-aged couple who were his roommates in a small apartment building on Barclay Avenue, police said.

Authorities said it appeared that a dispute had erupted between the two men, which prompted the attack and the subsequent suicide.

Miguel Torres, 24, of 147-20 Barclay Ave., went into the bedroom of their shared apartment at 8:43 p.m. Sunday, said Officer John Giammarino, a police spokesman.

Torres shot Antonia Serrano, 43, once in the right arm, but she was able to escape and called police, Giammarino said.

In the meantime, Torres shot Efrein Franco, 53, once in the neck and once in the chest before shooting himself once in the head, Giammarino said.

Both victims were taken to New York Hospital Medical Center of Queens.

Brian Salisbury, a spokesman for NYHQ, said Tuesday Franco was in critical condition but was improving and Serrano had been discharged.
