By Michelle Han

A young, school security officer died Tuesday afternoon after collapsing on his way to breaking up a student fight at the Woodhaven high school where he worked, police said.

Orville Williams, 25, a security guard at Franklin K. Lane High School in Woodhaven, died after collapsing in a stairwell at the school, said Officer David Lanuto, a Police Department spokesman.

He was taken to Jamaica Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:25 p.m., Lanuto said.

Police said Williams had just broken up a scuffle in the school when he was called to another fight that erupted outside during dismissal shortly before 3 p.m..

Although medics and police tried to resuscitate Williams at the school, he was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. Lanuto said he had suffered cardiac arrest.

Williams, who was appointed to his position as security officer at Franklin K. Lane in July 1997, was the youngest of all the security guards at the school, said Margie Feinberg, a spokeswoman for the Board of Education.
