Antawn Dobie, a former standout at Monsignor McClancy High School, was named the Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week for the second time in three weeks as the 6-foot guard helped lead the Long Island University Blackbirds to their second win of the year, 78-59, over New Haven at the Schwartz Center on Monday night.
Dobie, a native of Corona, started alongside fellow freshman Maurice Yearwood in the back court and scored a team-high 18 points on 6-of-8 shooting. Dobie also had a game-high seven assists and four steals to go along with four rebounds. Dobie is second on the team in scoring, averaging 14 points a game. He is also shooting 50 percent from the field and averages 4.2 assists per game.
Former Forest Hills standout JaJa Bey also had a great game against the Chargers. The 6-foot-7 freshman forward also shot 6-for-8 from the field and scored 14 points. The Lefrak City resident also had four rebounds and three steals in 23 minutes. LIU improves its record to 2-3.
Shaheen Holloway and the Seton Hall Pirates received a scare Monday night at the Meadowlands as the Pirates defeated Columbia, 60-58. The South Jamaica native scored 11 points and added six assists, five rebounds and three steals in 31 minutes against the Lions.
