A St. Albans woman was sexually assaulted in her home Friday night when three gunmen broke into her residence at about 11:40 p.m. police said.
The 37-year-old woman was tied up and sexually assaulted with a metal object before the perpetrators made off with $500 in cash, said Officer Lee Ann Tracey, a police spokeswoman.
The victim was not identified because of the nature of the crime.
The men entered the house at Selover Road and Merrick Boulevard at gunpoint and ordered the woman to the floor.
Tracey said the police were looking for three men who spoke with Jamaican accents.
Police said the men dragged the woman into a bedroom demanding money and drugs. Reports said when she did not produce either, the intruders threatened to burn her with a curling iron. When the curling iron did not heat up, one of the men sodomized the woman with a metal object.
Tracey said the woman was taken to Mary Immaculate Hospital in Jamaica in stable condition. Police were seeking the men on charges of robbery and sexual assault.
Tracey said police had descriptions of two of the three men. One was black, about 23, 5 feet 11 inches tall, weighing 170 pounds and wearing a dark baseball hat. The other was black in his 20s and about 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighing 160 pounds. He was wearing beige pants at the time.
Police denied a published report in Newsday that a friend and her infant son were with the victim at the time of the robbery.
