Sheltered under one last golden umbrella of maple leaves, 30 residents of Sunnyside Gardens bid farewell recently to 20 trees claimed as the latest victims of the Asian longhorned beetle.
The trees, planted as part of the original design of the historic housing development, have graced 46th Street between Skillman and 39th Avenues for more than 70 years. But two weeks ago, the U.S. Department of Agriculture confirmed that they were infested with the beetles and will be destroyed next month.
