The icy winds and frigid temperatures that bore down on Queens and the rest of the city this week claimed two lives – an elderly Astoria woman who was a patient at Flushing Hospital and a homeless man in Jamaica.
The New York region Monday recorded the coldest temperature in three years, a low of 7 degrees Fahrenheit just before midnight and a high of only 28 degrees — still lower than the normal January mean temperature of around 30 degrees for New York. Winds were up to 30 miles per hour.
