Dead birds worry Bayside residents

Bayside residents who have found several dead birds in a small area of their community said the city Health Department has ignored their reports even though they believe the birds were infected with the West Nile virus.

A department spokesman emphasized Monday that the agency has not and would not pick up every dead bird reported, but he encouraged the public to continue do so as long as people wear gloves and double-bag the birds.

As Queens residents tried to deal with concerns over the West Nile virus, which can causes encephalitis in humans, politicians and health officials gathered at New York University Medical Center Tuesday to discuss the virus and the city
