Based on unofficial returns from the city Board of Elections, Gianaris captured 51 percent of the vote. Of the 7,676 who voted in the district, 3,911 cast ballots for Gianaris and 3,765 voted for Thermos.
Gianaris, 30, will now face Republican contender Vince Tabone, who showed up at both rallies Tuesday night, in November. The district covers Astoria and Long Island City.
In his acceptance speech at the Taminent Democratic Club, Gianaris recognized many of his biggest supporters, including state Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, who thanked the club for sending the Assembly
