Church fair draws hundreds to Woodhaven

By Adam Kramer

The church, at 93-12 91st Ave. in Woodhaven, holds the fair every year on the second Saturday in November and each time the church chooses a different theme. This year it was “USA 2000.”

“Because the fair fell on the same day as Veterans Day we decided to honor United States veterans,” said Pam Steffens, a member of the fair organizing committee. “In a nice tribute to veterans we decorated the church with the colors of the American flag.”

She said the church was transformed into a sea of red, white and blue, and flags and pictures of Uncle Sam were placed along the walls. There was also a 6-foot cardboard cutout of Uncle Sam on the church's auditorium stage.

“The fair is the main fund-raiser of the church,” Steffens said. “We are a Protestant church and because of religious reasons we cannot hold bazaars like Catholic churches.”

A highlight was the Chinese auction held in the center of the church's auditorium amid all the tables with baked goods, chocolates, books, jewelry, and crafts for sale, she said.

Steffens said they were hoping the fair would draw more than 500 people, but the crowd was steady throughout the day and church members were happy with the whole event.
