Oratorio Society of Queens offers Handel’s ‘Messiah’

By The Times-Ledger

The Society was established in 1927 as the Flushing Oratorio Society, and in 1985 it was incorporated and the name was changed in order to, as its publicity states, “reflect the growing participation of voices beyond the borders of Flushing.”

Now, more than 80 members perform under the artistic direction of David Close.

Formerly a conductor and opera coach at Queens College, Close is now also organist and music director of St. Thomas Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Woodhaven, and organist at Temple Emmanuel in Lynbrook, L.I.

He was born, raised, and educated in Queens, and lives in Bayside.

Bayside High School is at Corporal Kennedy Street and 32nd Avenue in Bayside. Tickets are $15 ($12 for seniors and students, free for children under 12) and are available at the door.
