Christopher Postiglione, 30, was hit by a car traveling eastbound on Horace Harding Expressway on Jan. 11, 1999 while working for the city DEP. Postiglione, who was taken to New York Hospital Medical Center of Queens, died ten days later from his injuries.
The driver of the vehicle that hit Postiglione has not been caught and a $100,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and indictment of the person is still available.
On Wednesday, Nov. 22, at 12:30 p.m., City Councilmen Mike Abel (R-Bayside) and Morton Povman (D-Forest Hills), DEP Commissioner Joel Miele and Postiglione's family and friends were scheduled to gather to dedicate a triangle park at 174th Street and the LIE service road in the fallen worker's memory.
“This is a true and fitting memorial to a fine young man who sacrificed his life on the job,” Povman said.
Abel, who acknowledged that the city regularly honors fallen police officers and firefighters, said “we often fail to recognize our many other city workers who put themselves at risk each and every day and face injury and even death. Those who work to fix our streets and sewers face a risk in their duties as well.”
Povman and Abel sponsored the legislation to rename the triangle in honor of Postiglione. Mayor Rudy Giuliani was also invited to the event.
Povman described Postiglione as “well loved by many of his co-workers as well as his family and friends. We can never bring Christopher back, but we can memorialize him in the way he deserves to be honored.”
Abel said “as we honor Christopher, we honor all those city workers who tragically lost their lives while on the job.”
