College Round-up: Roker leads Wagner with year’s first double-double

Roker, a 5-foot-9 sophomore guard and Whitestone native, scored a team-high 21 points and added 11 rebounds for the Seahawks and was one of several former Queens high school players to play well last week.

Another ex-Royal, Mary Kacic, teamed up with former Martin Luther star Rebecca Thompson to rally the Manhattan Jaspers to a 55-52 win over Bronx rival Fordham Saturday.

Kacic, a 5-foot-6 junior guard from Howard Beach, scored eight points in 13 minutes, including a three-pointer that gave the Jaspers their first lead at 47-46.

Thompson, a 5-foot-10 freshman from Richmond Hill, scored a team-high 12 points off the bench to ignite the rally.

Cindy Johnson, a 5-foot-8 senior guard from Far Rockaway, helped lead Delaware to a pair of wins over the weekend. The former August Martin standout had nine points, two assists and two steals to lead the Blue Hens to a 70-50 win over Hartford Friday night. Sunday, Johnson scored 17 points, including a perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line, in a 76-55 win over America East rival Vermont.

Two other former Angels also had solid games last week. Leah Cromer, a 6-foot-3 senior center had seven points and eight rebounds for St. Peter's in a 66-53 loss to Monmouth last Wednesday night. Allison Thorne, a 6-foot-3 senior forward/center, had eight points and a team-high seven boards in 22 minutes off the bench to lead Fairfield to a 92-73 win over Harvard Saturday.

Sue Bird, possibly the most famous Christ the King alum playing Division I basketball, had nine points, five rebounds and three steals in No. 1 Connecticut's 90-63 victory over George Washington last Wednesday.

On the men's side, it took a bit longer than expected but Jeff McMillan made his collegiate debut Saturday at Madison Square Garden for the Fordham men's basketball team. The bulky 6-foot-8 freshman forward who starred at Bayside High School didn't disappoint either, scoring 16 points on 7-of-8 shooting, eight rebounds and two blocks in the Rams' 81-72 win over the South Florida.

Former St. Francis Prep standout Drew Samuels is making the most of his last year of college basketball. The 6-foot-5 senior forward scored a team-high 22 points in Marist's 78-71 win over Western Michigan Saturday.

LeFrak City native JaJa Bey scored a career-high 23 points on 9-of-10 shooting and had four rebounds and three steals to lead Long Island University to a 75-69 win over Quinnipiac Saturday. The former Forest Hills standout couldn't keep up the hot shooting two games in a row, though as he struggled from the field, going 2-for-10, he was 5-for-6 from the line to score 10 points in the Blackbirds' 73-56 loss to Towson Monday night. The 6-foot-7 sophomore forward also had five rebounds, two assists and two steals in the loss.

Former Rangers teammate Dawan Gary had six points and five rebounds in the win over the Braves and also couldn't find his shot in the loss, shooting 1-for-8 from the field. The 6-foot-6 sophomore forward from LeFrak City had five points and five rebounds against Towson.

Keith Leslie, a St. John's Prep alum, had seven points and three steals in the loss to Towson and three points in the win over Quinnipiac.

Kason Mims played well for Quinnipiac in the loss. The 6-foot-3 freshman guard from Astoria had nine points and nine boards in 33 minutes for the Braves. In the team's 86-80 loss at St. Francis (N.Y.) last Wednesday, the former Christ the King standout had seven points, four assists and three rebounds.

Mims' former Royals teammate Zack Williams had 13 points and two rebounds in Ohio State's 90-44 trouncing of Eastern Kentucky Saturday. The 6-foot-7 freshman forward is third on the Buckeyes in scoring with 9.8 points per game.

Another of Bob Oliva former players, Kamaal McQueen, had 16 points and five rebounds in 23 minutes in St. Peter's 79-73 loss to North Carolina-Greensboro. McClancy grad Daryl Boykins, a freshman point guard for the Peacocks, had three points, five assists and three rebounds in the loss. Former Cardozo star Melvin Robinson added nine points in 28 minutes for St. Peter's.

Former Molloy star Reggie Brown was on fire from beyond the arc in Richmond's 83-73 win over Mississippi State Saturday. The 6-foot-4 sophomore guard had 21 points on 5-of-7 from three-point range in 35 minutes for the Spiders.

Another former Stanner, Uka Agbai, a 6-foot-8 sophomore forward, had seven points (3-for-3 from the field, 1-for-1 from the line) in Boston College's 77-48 win over Holy Cross Monday night. Jave Meade, a 6-foot-1 freshman guard out of Christ the King, had five points, three assists and two rebounds in two minutes for the Crusaders. The Long Island City resident had 11 points, three rebounds and three assists in Holy Cross' 73-61 win over Manhattan in Worcester, Mass.

Agbai, from Queens Village, had eight points and seven boards in 30 minutes in the Eagles 71-57 win over Wofford Saturday. Flushing native Wilky Colin had two points in one minute for the Terriers in the loss.

Women's basketball

St. John's 63, St. Joseph (Pa.) 62. Senior Latasha Thompson hit the game-winning jumper with five seconds left in the game to lift the Red Storm to thrilling 63-62 win over St. Joseph's at Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse last Wednesday night.

The guard scored a season-high 27 points as St. John's (3-2) won their second straight game. For her effort, she was named Big East Player of the Week. Junior guard Rasheedah Brown added 15 points with four assists and three steals. Tynisha Myles chipped in 10 points and a team-high six rebounds before fouling out late in the game.

The Red Storm committed just nine turnovers and shot 65 percent from the field in the second half. St. John's returns to action Thursday night at Alumni Hall when Old Dominion takes on the Red Storm at 7:30 p.m.
