This is KIDS' SPACE, a guide to things for children to do and see.
We always like to hear from the kids themselves – what's going on in their school or neighborhood, and what they think. We also welcome original writing, play and movie reviews, reports from schools, poetry, drawings, and photos.

No too long ago, New Year's Eve meant little for kids except to be deposited with a babysitter and maybe allowed to stay up to midnight to watch The Ball come down on TV.
But now there are plenty of activities for kids and their families, particularly the citywide “First night” events.
As the largest and most diverse of the city's five boroughs, Queens' role in the First Night celebrations is big.
Many performances are scheduled in the 2000-2001 season of Queens Theatre in the Park in Flushing Meadows. They are all a great way for kids to tear away from their video and computer monitors and experience the magic of live theater. Upcoming productions include The Snow Queen, James and the Giant Peach, Animal Tales and Dinosaur Scales, and Jack and the Beanstalk.
High Five, a non-profit group, makes it possible for middle school and high school students (with I.D.) in all five boroughs to see some of the top performances and other cultural events around the city for just $5 a ticket. call 212-445-8587 or go online: www.high5tix.org.
Kids' school report
By John Bowne High School students
Earlier this month students of the Drama Production Workshop of John Bowne High School in Flushing presented the play, “Stand and Deliver.”
The play is about Garfield High School, a gang- infested high school in Los Angeles, a school on the brink of being closed down, until a new teacher comes and gives the students hope. The teacher, played by Christina Morgan of Flushing, a senior at Bowne, gives the students hope and helps them to improve their grades.
Carlos Cruz of Corona played the leading male role in the play. Teacher Bonnie Max is the Drama Production director.
Clubs
Did you know that we at John Bowne High School have a wide variety of different clubs in our school? Well we do; we have many different clubs. Our clubs represent the cultural and religious diversity of our school Our clubs also are community minded. For example The Caribbean Club is participating in a canned food drive run by “City Harvest.” High school senior Akilah Ellington of Jamaica, the president of the club, said, “We are just trying to give to those who are less fortunate.”
Another club that is giving back to the community is the Peer Mediation Group, which sponsored a toy drive to donate toys for the children at Flushing Hospital.
The International Christian Club went to the Jackson Heights Salvation Army to help police officers distribute toys to more than 300 neighborhood children. Letiah Fraser of Flushing, a senior at Bowne, is president of this club.
The Senior Math Team finished third in the city this fall. Two high scorers were Shan Jin and Eric Chen, both of Flushing.
Sports
The Girls Basketball Team currently holds a record of 6-1 . They are one of the top three teams in the league.
The girls' and boys' track teams have done well in Cross Country and Indoor Track. Their season continues into the spring.
