But the Royals are their old selves in the 2000-2001 season, winning the Galaxo Holiday Classic in Raleigh, N.C. over the holiday break and defeating the No. 2 ranked team in the nation, Narbonne High School out of Harbor City, Calif., in the process.
The win over Narbonne featured the stellar play of senior Clare Droesch of Belle Harbor. The Boston College-signee scored 34 points as the Royals upset the defending national champions, 65-60, in overtime.
Droesch scored seven points in overtime to key the victory and was named tournament MVP. Christina Catalanotto added eight points and was also voted to the all-tournament team.
The win followed an impressive 83-40 drubbing of West View High School out of Portland Ore., which was without two key players, Georgia-signees Kara and Kim Braxton. Droesch led the Royals with 22 points in the win.
Christ the King is now 10-0 on the year.
Mt. St. Ursula 51, Mary Louis 38. The Hilltoppers fell to Mt. St. Ursula last week, as Lorraine Millington scored 17 and Michelle Williams added 15 for the winners.
Canarsie 84, St. John's Prep 38. The Red Storm fell to the Chiefs, as Inga Stephens led the way with 32 points, followed by Selene McGillvary who added 10.
St. Francis Prep 83, St. Edmund 28. Junior point guard Dawn Gorynski scored 24 points to lead the Terriers. Dana Kirchoff added 14 and Caitlin Kennedy contributed 10 points and 13 rebounds in the victory.
